In the end, Connie wasn’t even mad.
Ratings for the finale of my season of The Catch were through the roof, and magazines couldn’t get enough.
I was busy beyond my wildest dreams, but still found time to make it back to Starlight as often as I could. Don’t get me wrong, I love the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but a piece of my heart will always be waiting back home in Southern Indiana. I don’t try to fight that any more.
At the end of October, I take a break from filming the pilot for a new police procedural and head back to the farm. I love days like these, sitting out on the porch in the late autumn sunshine, snuggled under a blanket while Tucker tends to the farm.
He comes back to the farmhouse after lunch and finds me leafing through scripts.
“Which one are you thinking of taking?” Tucker asks, wiping his hands on his jeans and sinking down beside me on the swing.
I smile softly and let the papers drop.
“None of them.”
“None?” Tucker frowns. “Babe, you know that when you’re ready to go back to Los Angeles, I’ll support you. I have someone who can run the farm, and-“
I place a finger over his mouth. When he finally falls silent, I remove my finger and dot his lips with a kiss. My left hand settles on my stomach and the diamond ring firmly ensconced on my fourth finger – nestled next to a matching gold band- flashes in the light.
“It isn’t that,” I assure him. “I know that you support my career.”
“Well, what is it then?”
Tucker frowns and I feel the urge to kiss him again.
“None of these start filming until next June- and I think I’ll be a little busy then.”
Tucker still doesn’t get it, and so I waggle my finger again. He finally sees where my hand is resting. I watch his face as he mentally counts the months until June and then it finally clicks. His features erupt into a smile and one of his work-roughened hands slips down over the still-flat plane of my belly to rest protectively over top of his unborn child.
“I love you, Kelsey Cain,” he whispers against my ear. His voice is husky with love and also, I think, a little bit of surprise that we found each other again in the end.
I cover his hand with mine.
It’s exactly what I never knew I always wanted.
